Identifying the Main Culprits - Symptoms - Treatment |
|
 |
 |
Certain contributors to aging skin, like hormonal changes and genetics, are uncontrollable. This type of aging is referred to as "intrinsic." But there are also preventable extrinsic factors, including:
Sun exposure (which causes "photo-aging")
Pollution and exposure to oxygen free radicals
Smoking
Visible signs of aging occur when our bodies begin producing less collagen and elastin, resulting in wrinkles and sagging. In addition, dead skin cells take longer to shed and cell turnover slows, making skin drier. All skin types will inevitably age, but at different rates of speed and with different symptoms.

Identifying the Main Culprits
Sun Exposure
Most premature aging of the skin can be attributed to repeated sun exposure, which can cause skin to lose the ability to repair itself. Unprotected sun exposure takes its toll on skin with symptoms like wrinkles, age spots, spider veins, hyperpigmentation, and blotchiness.
Pollution and Oxygen Free Radicals
See Environmental Damage
Smoking
Smoking speeds up skin's aging process by reducing blood supply to the skin and polluting the bloodstream with toxins. Reduced blood supply means the availability of oxygen is reduced, which results in unhealthy-looking skin. The term "smoker's face" was added to the medical dictionary in 1985 - some distinctive characteristics of this skin condition are prominent lines and wrinkles, and a leathery texture.

Symptoms
How do I determine my client's needs when it comes to aging skin?
Different people will have different anti-aging needs according to their genes, stage of aging and how well they have taken care of their skin.
Common signs of aging are:
- Wrinkles - most noticeable around the eyes, mouth and forehead, wrinkles can be fine or deep, depending on the patient's age, exposure to sun, and if they smoke.
- Age Spots - Dark brown spots are the result of sun exposure and are classified as Solar Lentigines (see Hyperpigmentation section)
- Dryness and Itching - Aging skin has less ability to moisturize itself and often has increased in sensitivity. This can cause flaking, redness and discomfort.
- Loss of firmness - Aging causes decreased production of collagen and elastin and a loss of underlying fat in the skin. This results in thinner, less elastic skin.

Treatment and Prevention
How do I treat my client's aging skin??
In order to help reduce and prevent the common signs of aging, it is important to do the following:
- Exfoliation and Hydration
Receiving regular exfoliating peel treatments is an effective way to remove dead skin cells and plump the skin. These peels are also a way to treat more prominent signs of sun damage, like deep wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.
How do I choose the type of peel for my patient?
The type of chemical peel that you use depends on the level of aging and skin sensitivity of your client.

- Daily Homecare
Dark brown spots are the result of sun exposure and are classified as Solar Lentigines ...see Hyperpigmentation section
- Sun Protection
UV rays are the skin's worst enemy and accelerate the signs of aging. An SPF of 25+ must be used daily to protect the dermis and prevent sun damage.
