Fitzpatrick Classification - Common Problems - Treatment Options
How do I determine my client's sensitivity level?

Contrary to what many people believe, darker skin is actually more sensitive than lighter skin because it produces more melanin. Therefore, the general rule is the darker the skin, the less resilient it is to treatment. By looking at a client's hair and eye color, determining their ethnic background and finding out their reaction to the sun, you can use the Fitzpatrick Classification of Skin Types to determine appropriate treatments.

Fitzpatrick Classification

Darker Skin Types

IV - Brown skin that rarely burns; typically Asian or Indian descent
V - Dark skin that very rarely burns; typically Hispanic descent
VI - Black skin that never burns; African American descent

Common Problems

What are the main skin concerns of Fitzpatrick Types IV to VI?

Darker skin is the most prone to hyperpigmentation and also at the most risk for hyperpigmentation following a chemical peel treatment. These skin types also tend to be oilier and commonly have problems with acne breakouts.

Treatment Options

Less aggressive treatments suit dark skin types best because they pose less risk of post-peel hyperpigmentation. PCA SKIN offers a number of options that help correct hyperpigmentation and acne on darker skin.

Homecare

A homecare regimen suited to the needs of the client is essential in maintaining and prolonging peel results. A regimen for hyperpigmented skin will help fade and control dark patches, while a regimen for acneic, hyperpigmented skin will stave off breakouts while gradually fading hyperpigmented areas. Particular attention should be paid when prescribing products with Hydroquinone for darker skin because it can aggravate these types.
