What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a long-term condition that affects the skin. It is most often found in the middle third of the face and is the result of capillary hyperactivity. The condition begins as persistent flushing, leads to the appearance of telangiectasia (tiny blood vessels) and can result in swelling of the face. As the condition progresses, the skin becomes ruddier and the rosacea can inflame larger areas of the face. Rosacea cannot be cured but it can be controlled.

Assessment

What does Rosacea look like?

Rosacea may sometimes be referred to as "acne rosacea", but it is very different from acne. It does not cause whiteheads, blackheads, cysts or lumps, but instead it may result in dome-shaped pustules. The most common characteristics of this skin condition are:

Frequent blushing or flushing
The appearance of broken capillaries
Dry and flaky facial skin
Sensitivities to makeup, spicy food and alcohol
Overall redness on the nose, forehead, cheeks and chin.
Swelling of the face

Diagnosis

If you suspect that a client has rosacea, you must refer them to a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. A physician can prescribe oral or topical anti-biotics to treat the condition or recommend laser procedures to correct pigment and overall textural changes.

Control

How do I help my client control their rosacea?

Once a patient has received a proper diagnosis from their doctor, they may choose to receive facial treatments to control the symptoms of rosacea. To control irritation and redness caused by this condition, it is important to do the following:
  1. Exfoliate
Receiving chemical peel treatments by PCA SKIN can effectively control rosacea symptoms; however, gentler treatments must be used so the condition is not made worse. Here are some options:

    Less aggravated rosacea -
    Ultra Peel® I Exfoliating Treatment
    pHaze 23 A&C Synergy Serum
    pHaze 24 Rejuvenating Serum
    Step 2 Hemoglobe-1 (Oxygenating Trio)
Step 5 Beta-C Balm (Pumpkin Peel)

    Aggravated rosacea -
    Sensi Peel® Exfoliating Treatment
    pHaze 24 Rejuvenating Serum
    Step 2 Hemoglobe-1 (Oxygenating Trio)
Step 5 Beta-C Balm (Pumpkin Peel)
    pHaze 18 Clearskin

  2. Daily Homecare
To keep skin bacteria-free and moisturized, it is important to stick to a regimen that will gently cleanse the skin while helping calm redness.
